Gender neutral housing: a good idea, but needs some work

Denison prides itself on being a community that does not discriminate against anyone, including people who would describe themselves as being GLBTQA. But members of Outlook claim that the university's ban on gender neutral housing does just that. Therefore, they are petitioning residential life for a lift on this ban, a petition that includes asking for student help and input via tabling in Slayter.

A month after a handful of students learned of the administration's decision to cut need-based aid for some select groups of students completing off-campus studies, the Denison community is responding.

John Cort, director of international studies and professor of religion, and Michael Tangeman, associate professor of modern languages, have drafted a letter to send to president Dale Knobel, provost Bradley Bateman, and the vice-president for finance and management, Seth Patton.

Denison has the distinction of being the site of an earth shattering breakthrough in determining the origin of Luna, what we call our moon.

Professor of Geology Emeritus Robert Malcuit was an early proponent of a theory called the "capture model." When he first began studying the issue of lunar origins, there were three prominent theories.

Eating disorders are not an unfamiliar concept to college students. We all remember discussing them in our high school health classes, and more than one or two of us are frantically trying to figure out how to address that freshman fifteen. However, with all the information out there about eating disorders, most of us remain ignorant about what eating disorders really are, and how they affect the people around us.

Ah, spring break. For some, it is a time of luxurious relaxation: poolside cabanas, warm weather and exotic adventures in faraway places. For others, though, it's simply time to go home, sleep and take in one week off the hill. As nice as it is to go home for a while, things can certainly get boring when all you're doing is spending time with your remote and a bag of chips.

In what was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the Denison women's basketball program, the 2009-10 campaign turned out to be the exact opposite.

During pre-season workouts back in October it was very unclear whether the Big Red, which entered the season with 10 rookies and just two seniors on the roster, would be able to make up for the production they lost after the 2008-09 campaign when six seniors graduated.

The Denison women's softball team ended their 2009 season in somewhat of a disappointing fashion.

Although they captured last year's regular season North Coast Athletic Conference crown, they were ousted in the semi-finals of the NCAC Tournament, which ended their chances to make the NCAA Tournament.

Study abroad is meant to be about more than just learning a language, seeing a new country, and finding a fresh perspective. Broadening your horizon and raising your awareness of the rest of the world is great, but it's also about learning about yourself, seeing a little deeper into your own mind, and finding your limits.

Sportscenter's opening jingle sounded a lot different to me the other morning for some reason. It couldn't have been anchor Stuart Scott's "boo-yah." It wasn't the newest Twitter update about Tiger's trip back home. Watching the normal dazzling dunks, a super serving of slap-shots, and the highlights of the "Top Ten Plays" wasn't it either.

Feeling the cold on my face and unsteadily balancing on blades, I stepped onto the rink. Between the crowd of middle-schoolers clumped on the sides and the three-foot-tall hockey kids going the wrong way around rink, I was reminded of my short-lived quest for Olympic gold this past week at Newark's finest ice arena.

Joanna Newsom's Have One On Me: Drag City Always Wins

Joanna Newsom is not to be taken seriously. In fact, it is important to understand that the artists on Drag City--the Chicago-based indie label that is home to Newsom and a number of other semi-geniuses--is not to be taken seriously. Of course, in no way does this mean that Newsom's releases--or her label mate's releases--are not brilliant, beautiful, and fully realized perfect pieces of music.
