The Denison Women’s Basketball team has had a strong start this season, and are currently winners of four straight.

The team headed off the hill this past Wednesday to Portage County, OH to take on the Hiram College Terriers. With an 7-3 conference record, the team headed in confident and ready to keep the wins coming.

The final score ended with Denison coming out on top, topping the Terriers by a final score of 66-57.

The Big Red were led by Lauren Hofer ‘20 who scored a career-high 20 points in the game, helping Denison come out on top. Guards Alison Schafer ‘20 and Valesha Province ‘19 worked together to help Denison pull away build a lead that swelled to 22 at one point.

With this win behind them, the Big Red Women’s Basketball team improved to 12-7 on the season, and now sit in second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a powerful record of 8-3. This loss for the Terriers dropped their record to 9-10, and 3-7 in conference play.   

Junior Alison Schafer ‘20 from Cleveland, OH has had a great time playing and succeeding with her teammates so far this season. When asked about their incredible winning streak thus far she said, “Winter break made us stronger as a team. We started playing really well with each other, which has really helped us in conference play. I think now that we keep winning our confidence keeps increasing as a team, which helps us believe that we actually have a chance to win the whole thing,”.

With more games to come, the team is ready to continue to work hard and see results. When asked about what’s to come, Allison said, “I’m really excited to continue to see how players step up and into roles they hadn’t previously in the season. I’m also excited for our team to continue to get closer, allowing us to be more successful then we have in the past,”.

After winning eight of their nine last games, the Denison’s Women’s Basketball team is back on the road next Wednesday, January 30, traveling to Middletown, OH. Here, they’ll take on the Miami-Middletown ThunderHawks at 7 p.m..  As the season continues to play out for the Big Red, it will be exciting to see how the Women’s team continues to work together and grow both as a team and as individual players.
