The DePauw Tigers traveled to Granville this past Saturday to take on our women’s field hockey team in a cutthroat game on Deeds Field.

The first half was dominated by the Big Red. AC Veith sent a shot across goal that was sent into the back of the cage for a score by Lucy Pearsall. This was Lucy’s fourth goal of the season, sending Denison into an early lead of 1-0.

Two minutes later with a gap in the Tiger defense, Charlotte Godfrey ‘21 broke through and send a pass forward to Maya Tumiwa ‘22 who sent the ball into the back of DePauw’s net giving the Big Red a 2-0 lead.

As we approached halftime, Tumiwa and Godfrey tagteamed once again. This time, Tumiwa assisted Godfrey on her third goal of the season and the Big Red their third goal of the game. Michelle Kabaira ‘21 scored once again sending the Big Red back into the locker room 4-0 at the half.

While the first half was a breeze for the Big Red, the Tigers came back out on the field for the second half ready to fight. However, before they had their turn to retaliate Lauren Lazo’s ‘21 breakaway up the left side led Denison to a 5-0 lead. It was Lazo’s second goal of the season.

The final score tallied up to 5-2, and the win over the DePauw gave Denison a 10-2 record overall and an 8-0 record in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Denison women’s field hockey team has been strong from the start. Captain Virginia Hamilton ‘19 commented on the strengths of the team and how they felt walking onto the field that day.

“This was our second time this season we had seen DePauw and we had a lot of pressure on our backs going into this game. We were undefeated in conference and had a target on our backs, but we came out strong from the start. The team utilized our speed, skills, and depth to make this win possible. We have had a lot of fun this season due to the team being both cohesive on and off the field! I am so proud to be a member of Denison field hockey.”

Captain Ali Gakenheimer ‘20 was also excited for the team’s win moving forward. “I would say that we are really pleased with the win from saturday and I think that this win will give us great momentum and confidence for the second half of the season.”

Denison will look to stay undefeated in the NCAC next Friday, October 12 when they host the College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
